The State of Progress Today

Rapid worldwide growth in GDP per capita and declining poverty rates has been a major success story of the past 20 years. In 2000, 29% of the population lived on less than $2.15 a day (2017 Purchasing Power); by 2015 this had dropped to 10% (2017 PP).

Literacy rates have also improved significantly: from 83% globally in 1990 to 91% today. This rapid economic progress has seen the emergence of a new global middle class, estimated at 3 billion people in 2017 - up from just 500 million two decades ago. Despite numerous challenges, humanity is making great strides towards greater prosperity for all its citizens.

International organizations such as the United Nations are playing an increasingly important role in promoting peace and security through diplomatic dialogue rather than military intervention.

The development of green technologies over the past 20 years has been a major contributor to global progress. Renewable energy sources such as solar, wind and hydropower have become increasingly cost-effective and widely available, reducing dependence on fossil fuels and helping to reduce emissions. Electric vehicles are becoming more popular, with sales increasing by 40% in just one year (from 2018 to 2019).
